DATA VISUALIZATION: Information summarized into Visuals
I think it is important to find visual tools that help us connect concept and reality. In this talk by Hans Rosling organized by TED we see the importance of understanding our data and the power of data visualization in our ever increasingly complex world. Rosling’s use of data shows us how a picture says a thousand words and explains to us how important it is for information to be shared, accessible, identified and visualized because information on the internet is cumulatively growing. As we move into the semantic thinking web there will be a need for info graphic visual tools to explain the web’s complex data.

Excellent article!! I worked on a Hurricane Katrina data-visualization project last year for my agency in New Orleans. It’s an oral history with compelling, raw video that offers an unedited look at people’s memories of the storm and the fallout. As each video plays, a simple visual device displays recurring themes by keyword; commonalitites between experiences are presented via lists of names headed by recurring topics. Thought your readers might be interested.

The project took about 4 months — nights and weekends. By the time the site was completed, what began as a side project had translated into something even more significant: it is a showcase of the connections between co-workers who will be forever bound by a common experience.
Thanks! JP
